Clinical workflow

Step-by-step clinical workflow

Follow the clinical sequence below together with the current manufacturer instructions for use and your established endodontic protocol.

0 1 Create access and identify the canal Establish clear access before introducing the K‑File.

Establish straight-line access and clearly identify the canal orifice. Remove restrictive coronal interference when appropriate while preserving tooth structure. Maintain irrigation and lubrication throughout canal negotiation.

0 2 Scout and negotiate the canal Begin with the smallest K‑File that advances passively.

Select the smallest appropriate K‑File and pre-curve it when needed. Advance using controlled watch-winding and light apical pressure while maintaining irrigation and lubrication. Withdraw frequently to clean the flutes and reassess whenever resistance increases.

0 3 Confirm and maintain working length Use a small K‑File with an apex locator and/or radiograph.

Once a reproducible canal pathway has been established, use an appropriate small K‑File to confirm working length. Maintain a stable coronal reference point, irrigate regularly and reconfirm the measurement whenever the reference point or canal conditions change.

0 4 Enlarge the glide path progressively Advance through sequential ISO sizes using controlled manual motion.

Progress through the appropriate ISO sizes using controlled watch-winding, gentle lifting and short filing strokes. Avoid skipping sizes. Irrigate and recapitulate regularly, and withdraw each instrument frequently to clean and inspect its flutes.

0 5 Verify the preparation and proceed Confirm working length and a smooth, reproducible pathway.

After reaching the clinically appropriate final hand-file size, reconfirm working length and verify that the file moves predictably within the established pathway. Complete the required irrigation before proceeding with mechanical shaping, final irrigation or obturation according to the treatment plan.

Sterility & safety

Important information for this product version

Review the sterility status, use designation and safety information for this exact product before clinical use.

Sterility Sterile
Use Single use only
Clinical handling & safety Review before clinical use
Sterile product handling

Supplied sterile and intended for single clinical use. No pre-use sterilization is required while the sterile barrier remains intact. Do not use an instrument if its packaging is damaged, opened, wet or otherwise compromised. Do not reprocess, re-sterilize or reuse a single-use instrument.

  • For professional dental use only. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and rubber dam isolation.
  • Establish straight-line access and maintain irrigation and lubrication throughout instrumentation.
  • Use only as a manual instrument. Do not mount a K‑File in a rotary or reciprocating handpiece.
  • Avoid excessive apical pressure. Never force the instrument through resistance.
  • Inspect each file before and during use. Discard any instrument showing unwinding, bending, stretching, corrosion, cracks or other damage.
  • Exercise additional caution in severely curved, abrupt, dividing or recurving canals.
  • Single use only. Dispose of the instrument after treatment in an appropriate biohazard sharps container.
  • Store in the original packaging in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and humidity. Do not use after the expiry date.
  • Always consult the current Canadian-labelled NIC® instructions for use supplied with the product.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Quick answers about product selection, sizes, clinical use and handling.

What is the main clinical role of a K‑File?

A K‑File is used for canal scouting and negotiation, working-length confirmation, glide-path development, recapitulation and progressive manual canal enlargement.

What motion should be used with a K‑File?

Use controlled manual watch-winding, gentle lifting and short filing strokes with minimal apical pressure. The instrument should never be mounted in a rotary or reciprocating handpiece.

How is a K‑File different from an H‑File?

A K‑File has a square cross-section and is suited to canal scouting, negotiation, recapitulation and glide-path development using controlled manual motion. An H‑File cuts primarily on the withdrawal stroke and is generally used to enlarge a canal pathway that has already been established.

When might a C‑File be selected instead of K-File?

A C‑File may be considered for narrow, calcified or difficult canals where greater buckling resistance and controlled penetration are required. Instrument selection should follow the canal anatomy, the clinician’s judgement and the current manufacturer instructions.

How is the file size identified for hand files?

The handles follow standard ISO size colour coding, allowing each file size to be identified quickly during treatment.

Are the K‑Files supplied sterile?

Yes. NIC® SS K‑Files are supplied sterile in packs of six and are intended for single clinical use. No pre-use sterilization is required while the sterile barrier remains intact.
