Clinical workflow

Step-by-step clinical workflow

Follow the clinical sequence below together with the current manufacturer instructions for use and your established endodontic protocol.

0 1 Establish the canal pathway first Confirm a smooth, reproducible pathway before introducing an H‑File.

Establish straight-line access and negotiate the canal with a small K‑File or C‑File. Confirm patency, working length and a smooth, reproducible pathway. Do not introduce an H‑File first into a tight, calcified or unscouted canal.

0 2 Select the smallest appropriate H‑File Begin with a file that enters the established pathway passively.

Select the smallest H‑File that can follow the prepared pathway without being forced or binding prematurely. Progress through sizes sequentially, increasing the size only when the preceding file moves freely and further enlargement is clinically required.

0 3 Cut with controlled pull strokes H‑Files cut primarily during withdrawal.

Advance the H‑File gently without forcing, then use short, controlled lifting or pull strokes. Apply cutting pressure primarily during withdrawal and direct the stroke toward the canal walls as appropriate for circumferential filing. Do not actively rotate, watch-wind or use aggressive push-pull movement while the file is engaged in dentin.

0 4 Irrigate, clean and recapitulate Clear accumulated debris and preserve the established pathway between instruments.

After a short series of pull strokes, withdraw the H‑File and clean its flutes. Irrigate the canal, replenish lubricant when appropriate and recapitulate with a smaller K‑File to maintain patency. Confirm that the pathway remains freely reproducible before reintroducing or progressing to another H‑File.

0 5 Progress conservatively and inspect Increase size only when further enlargement is clinically required.

Progress sequentially according to the canal anatomy and treatment objective. Inspect the H‑File after withdrawal for distortion, unwinding or visible damage and discard it immediately if compromised. Complete the procedure with appropriate irrigation and dispose of the instrument after its single clinical use.

Sterile product handling

NIC® Stainless Steel H‑Files are supplied sterile and are intended for single clinical use. No pre-use sterilization is required while the sterile barrier remains intact. Use each instrument for one clinical case only. Follow the current product label and NIC® instructions for use regarding sterility, storage, handling and disposal.

  • Intended for professional dental use only.
  • Establish a smooth, reproducible pathway with a small K‑File or C‑File before introducing an H‑File.
  • Use manually with short, controlled lifting or pull strokes, applying the cutting action primarily during withdrawal.
  • Do not actively rotate or watch-wind the H‑File while it is engaged in dentin.
  • Do not connect the instrument to a rotary or reciprocating handpiece.
  • Use minimal apical pressure and never force the instrument through resistance.
  • Irrigate frequently and recapitulate with a smaller K‑File between larger H‑Files.
  • Clean and inspect the flutes repeatedly during instrumentation.
  • Follow the current product label and NIC® instructions for use for indications, contraindications, technique and disposal.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Quick answers about product selection, sizes, clinical use and handling.

What are NIC® SS H‑Files used for?

NIC® SS H‑Files are manual instruments used for canal enlargement, circumferential filing and the removal of dentin or debris after a smooth, reproducible canal pathway has been established. They are not intended for initial canal scouting.

How does an H‑File differ from a K‑File?

K‑Files are commonly used for canal scouting, negotiation and glide-path development. H‑Files have sharper cutting flutes and remove dentin more aggressively, cutting primarily during withdrawal. For this reason, an H‑File should normally follow pathway establishment with a K‑File or C‑File.

What motion should be used with an H‑File?

Use short, controlled lifting or pull strokes, applying cutting pressure primarily during withdrawal. Introduce the file gently without forcing it. Do not actively rotate, watch-wind or use aggressive push-pull movements while the H‑File is engaged in dentin. H‑Files are manual instruments and should not be connected to a rotary or reciprocating handpiece.

Can H‑Files be used first in tight or calcified canals?

No. First establish a smooth, reproducible pathway with a small K‑File, or a C‑File in narrow or calcified anatomy. Confirm the working length before enlargement. An H‑File should not be introduced as the first instrument in a tight, calcified or unscouted canal.

How should I choose and progress through H‑File sizes?

Begin with the smallest H‑File that enters the prepared pathway passively and engages dentin without premature binding. Progress sequentially and increase the size only when the preceding instrument moves freely and further enlargement is clinically required. Do not skip several sizes or select a file larger than the canal can safely accept.

What irrigation, recapitulation and cleaning guidance applies?

Irrigate frequently and recapitulate with a smaller K‑File between larger H‑Files to maintain the established pathway and reduce debris accumulation. Clean the H‑File flutes after a short series of pull strokes, then replenish irrigant or lubricant before re-entry. If the file begins to bind, withdraw and clean it before continuing.

Are NIC® SS H‑Files sterile and reusable?

NIC® SS H‑Files are supplied sterile in packs of six and are intended for single clinical use. No pre-use sterilization is required while the sterile barrier remains intact. Inspect the instrument before and during use, discard it immediately if distortion or damage is observed, and do not reuse or reprocess it. Always follow the current product label and NIC® instructions for use.

Which H‑File sizes and lengths are currently available?

The current CanDent range includes ISO sizes 06, 08, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40, each with a constant .02 taper. Available lengths are 21 mm, 25 mm, 28 mm and 31 mm. Product availability may vary by selected variant.
