Clinical workflow

Step-by-step clinical workflow

Follow the clinical sequence below together with the current manufacturer instructions for use.

0 1 Establish the glide path #10 → #15 hand file · working length · patency

Establish straight-line access and negotiate the canal with stainless-steel hand files. Confirm patency with a size #10 K-file and create a smooth, reproducible glide path to at least a size #15 K-file at working length. Irrigate and recapitulate frequently before introducing KD Blue rotary files.

0 2 Small canals: begin with 30/.04 Passive Crown-Down progression · step down on resistance

For smaller canals, begin Crown-Down shaping with KD Blue 30/.04. Advance the file passively until resistance is encountered or working length is reached. If resistance occurs before working length, step down sequentially to a smaller .04 file. Irrigate, clean the flutes and recapitulate with a small hand file between rotary instruments.

0 3 Larger canals: begin with 40/.04 Coronal enlargement · Crown-Down shaping

For larger canals, begin with KD Blue 40/.04 and advance passively until resistance is encountered or working length is reached. When resistance occurs before working length, continue with smaller .04 instruments until a safe pathway is established. Irrigate and recapitulate between instruments.

0 4 Select the final taper and apical size .04 or .06 · ISO 15–40 · anatomy-led

Select the final KD Blue tip size and taper according to canal anatomy, curvature and the intended preparation. Use .04 taper when flexibility and more conservative enlargement are priorities. Use .06 selectively where anatomy supports greater taper. Continue enlargement only as clinically indicated, with irrigation and recapitulation between instruments.

0 5 Verify the final preparation Working length · final size and taper · irrigation

Verify working length and the final preparation size and taper. Complete the final irrigation and disinfection protocol, then dry the canal and proceed with the clinician's preferred obturation technique using components appropriate for the final preparation.

Clinical handling & safety Review before clinical use
Before first clinical use

NIC® KD Blue files are supplied non-sterile and must be sterilized before first clinical use. Steam-autoclave the instruments at 134°C for 18 minutes using a validated steam sterilization process. Allow the instruments to dry completely before clinical use. KD Blue files are intended for single clinical use only. After clinical use, discard the instrument and do not clean, disinfect, sterilize, re-sterilize or reuse it.

  • For professional dental use only.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and rubber dam isolation.
  • Do not use in patients with a known allergy or sensitivity to nickel-titanium or other device components.
  • Establish a smooth, reproducible glide path before introducing KD Blue rotary files.
  • Use NIC® KD Blue in continuous clockwise rotation only with a compatible torque-controlled endodontic motor. Do not use reciprocating motion.
  • Use the recommended 500 RPM speed and the file-specific torque setting for the selected size and taper.
  • Advance the file passively with minimal apical pressure. Do not force the instrument toward working length.
  • If resistance is encountered, withdraw the file, clean the flutes, irrigate, recapitulate and select a smaller instrument when appropriate.
  • Exercise additional caution in canals with abrupt curvature, canal division, calcification or other complex anatomy where safe passive progression cannot be achieved.
  • Clean and inspect the flutes regularly during use for deformation, unwinding, wear, corrosion or other signs of damage.
  • Irrigate and recapitulate frequently between rotary instruments.
  • Because of the MaxTech 6.0 heat treatment, a file may show slight pre-curvature. Do not forcefully straighten the instrument before use.
  • Single clinical use only. Do not clean, disinfect, sterilize, re-sterilize or reuse the file after clinical use.
  • Dispose of used instruments in an appropriate biohazard sharps container.
  • Store in the original packaging in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and humidity. Do not use after the stated expiry date.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Quick answers about product selection, configuration and clinical use.

What motion is used with NIC® KD Blue?

NIC® KD Blue is used in continuous clockwise rotation with a compatible torque-controlled endodontic motor. Do not use KD Blue in reciprocating motion.

What speed is recommended for KD Blue?

Use KD Blue at 500 RPM across the .04 and .06 file families.

What torque settings are used for KD Blue?

Torque is file-specific. For .04 taper, use 0.75 N·cm for sizes 15 and 20, 1.0 N·cm for sizes 25 and 30, and 1.3 N·cm for sizes 35 and 40. For .06 taper, use 2.0 N·cm for sizes 15 and 20, 3.0 N·cm for sizes 25 and 30, and 4.0 N·cm for sizes 35 and 40.

Which KD Blue file is used first in smaller canals?

For smaller canals, begin Crown-Down shaping with 30/.04. Advance the file passively. If resistance is encountered before working length, step down sequentially to a smaller .04 file rather than forcing the instrument apically.

Which KD Blue file is used first in larger canals?

For larger canals, begin with 40/.04 when canal anatomy supports it. Advance passively and step down to smaller .04 files if resistance is encountered before working length.

When should .04 versus .06 taper be selected?

Use .04 taper when flexibility and more conservative enlargement are priorities. Use .06 selectively where canal anatomy supports greater taper. The final taper should be selected according to anatomy, curvature and the intended preparation.

Which sizes and lengths are available for KD Blue?

KD Blue is available in 15/.04, 20/.04, 25/.04, 30/.04, 35/.04 and 40/.04, as well as 15/.06, 20/.06, 25/.06, 30/.06, 35/.06 and 40/.06. Available lengths are 21 mm, 25 mm and 31 mm.

Is NIC® KD Blue supplied sterile?

No. NIC® KD Blue is supplied non-sterile and must be sterilized before first clinical use according to the current manufacturer instructions for use. The product is intended for single clinical use.

What familiar workflow is KD Blue organized around?

KD Blue is organized around a familiar Vortex Blue® continuous-rotation workflow for clinicians who already use that type of rotary system. Always follow the product-specific KD Blue specifications and the current NIC® manufacturer instructions.

Where is NIC® KD Blue manufactured?

NIC® KD Blue is manufactured in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.
