Clinical workflow

Step-by-step clinical workflow

Follow the clinical sequence below together with the current manufacturer instructions for use.

0 1 Establish access, working length and glide path Straight-line access · working length · glide path to at least ISO 015

Establish straight-line access, determine working length and prepare a smooth, reproducible glide path before introducing the U+ rotary shaping files.

  • Confirm canal patency and working length.
  • Enlarge the glide path to at least ISO 015.
  • Irrigate and recapitulate before beginning rotary shaping.
  • Do not force a U+ file into a canal that has not been adequately negotiated.
0 2 Shape the coronal and middle canal S1 18/.02 · S2 20/.04 · selective SX 19/.04

Progress through the shaping files using the Crown-Down technique and the manufacturer-specified motor settings.

  • Use S1 18/.02 to begin progressive shaping.
  • Use a brushing action on the withdrawal stroke rather than sustained apical pressure.
  • Use SX 19/.04 selectively when additional coronal enlargement or improved straight-line access is clinically indicated.
  • Continue with S2 20/.04 toward working length.
  • Remove and clean the file frequently.
  • Irrigate, recapitulate and re-irrigate between files.
0 3 Complete apical finishing as indicated F1 20/.07 · F2 25/.08 · F3 30/.09 · F4 40/.06 · F5 50/.05

Begin apical finishing with F1 after shaping with S1 and S2. Evaluate the apical preparation after each finishing file and continue only when additional enlargement is indicated.

  • F1 20/.07 — gauge with an ISO #20 hand file.
  • F2 25/.08 — gauge with an ISO #25 hand file.
  • F3 30/.09 — gauge with an ISO #30 hand file.
  • F4 40/.06 — gauge with an ISO #40 hand file.
  • F5 50/.05 — gauge with an ISO #50 hand file.
  • Use minimal apical pressure.
  • Clean the flutes frequently and inspect the instrument.
  • Irrigate, recapitulate and re-irrigate after each file.

Sterilization information

NIC® U+ files in this listing are supplied sterile and are intended for single clinical use only. No pre-use sterilization is required when the sterile barrier is intact. Do not clean, disinfect, sterilize or re-sterilize before use. Do not use if the sterile package is damaged, opened, wet or otherwise compromised. After clinical use, discard the instrument in an appropriate biohazard sharps container. Do not clean, disinfect, sterilize or reuse the file after clinical use.

  • For professional dental use only.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and rubber dam isolation.
  • Do not use in patients with known allergic sensitivity to nickel-titanium alloy or any component of the device.
  • Do not use if the sterile package is damaged, opened, wet or otherwise compromised.
  • Do not use a file that is deformed, unwound, corroded, fractured or shows signs of wear.
  • Review pre-operative radiographs and determine working length using standard clinical methods before shaping.
  • Establish straight-line coronal and radicular access before introducing U+ files.
  • Establish a smooth, reproducible glide path to at least ISO 015 before rotary shaping.
  • Use only with a compatible torque-controlled endodontic motor in continuous clockwise rotation. Do not use U+ in reciprocating motion.
  • Use the manufacturer-specified speed and file-specific torque settings.
  • Use minimal apical pressure. Never force a U+ file down the canal.
  • Use S1, S2 and SX with a brushing action on the withdrawal stroke, brushing away from the furcation.
  • Use finishing files F1 through F5 with a passive, non-brushing action to working length.
  • Do not hold a finishing file at working length for longer than approximately one second.
  • Clean the flutes frequently and inspect the instrument for distortion or wear.
  • Irrigate, recapitulate and re-irrigate frequently throughout preparation, at minimum after each file.
  • Exercise additional caution around significant curvatures and complex canal anatomy where safe passive progression cannot be achieved.
  • Select the final finishing size according to canal anatomy and apical gauging. Avoid unnecessary over-enlargement.
  • A slight curvature caused by heat treatment is not necessarily a manufacturing defect. It is not necessary to straighten the instrument before use.
  • Single clinical use only. Do not clean, disinfect, sterilize, re-sterilize or reuse after clinical use.
  • After clinical use, discard the instrument in an appropriate biohazard sharps container.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Quick answers about product selection, configuration and clinical use.

Which U+ file is used first for shaping?

After a smooth, reproducible glide path has been established, shaping normally begins with S1 18/.02. SX 19/.04 is used selectively when additional coronal enlargement or improved straight-line access is indicated.

When is SX 19/.04 used?

SX is a selective coronal shaping file used for straight-line access and additional coronal enlargement when clinically indicated. It is not an automatic first step in every canal.

What is the U+ shaping sequence?

The U+ workflow progresses through S1 and S2 for shaping, followed by F1 for initial apical finishing. F2, F3, F4 and F5 are used progressively only when additional apical enlargement is indicated.

What motor settings are used for U+?

NIC® U+ is used in continuous clockwise rotation at 300 RPM with a compatible torque-controlled endodontic motor.

What torque is used for each U+ file?

SX and F5 are used at 3.0 N·cm. S1, S2 and F1 through F4 are used at 1.5 N·cm.

Can U+ be used in reciprocating motion?

No. NIC® U+ is intended for continuous clockwise rotary motion.

What glide path is required before using U+?

Establish a smooth, reproducible glide path to at least ISO 015 before beginning U+ rotary shaping.

Which lengths are available for U+?

SX is available in 19 mm. S1, S2 and F1 through F5 are available in 21 mm, 25 mm and 31 mm lengths.

Is this U+ listing sterile?

Yes. This U+ listing is supplied sterile and is intended for single clinical use. No pre-use sterilization is required when the sterile barrier is intact. Do not re-sterilize or reuse the instruments.

Where is NIC® U+ manufactured?

NIC® U+ is manufactured in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.
