Clinical workflow

Step-by-step clinical workflow

Follow the clinical sequence below together with the current manufacturer instructions for use.

0 1 Assess the existing treatment and obtain access Radiographs · canal anatomy · obturation material · straight-line access

Review radiographs to assess canal width, length and curvature. Identify the existing obturation material, establish adequate straight-line access and select the motor speed according to the material being removed.

0 2 Remove coronal filling material Begin with D1 30/.09 in the coronal third.

After establishing straight-line access and an initial pathway, use D1 with light, controlled pressure to remove filling material from the coronal third. Withdraw frequently, clean the flutes, irrigate and reassess.

0 3 Progress through the middle third Continue with D2 25/.08 after completing coronal removal.

Introduce D2 progressively into the middle third using light pressure. Remove accumulated filling material from the flutes frequently, irrigate and confirm that the pathway remains clear.

0 4 Address the apical third Use D3 20/.07 for deeper removal when canal anatomy permits.

Advance D3 carefully toward the apical third using light, controlled pressure. Withdraw and clean the instrument frequently while maintaining irrigation and continuously reassessing the canal anatomy.

0 5 Renegotiate, establish the glide path and reshape Hand files · working length · selected shaping system

After removing the obturation material, renegotiate the canal with small hand files, re-establish patency and working length, irrigate thoroughly, create a reproducible glide path and proceed with the selected shaping system according to its IFU.

Sterility & safety

Important information for this product version

Review the sterility, handling and safety information for this exact product version.

Sterility Non-sterile · sterilize before first use
Use Single Use
Clinical handling & safety Review before clinical use
Before first clinical use

This product is supplied non-sterile and must be sterilized before first clinical use. Steam sterilize at 134°C for 18 minutes using a validated steam sterilization process. Allow the instruments to dry completely before clinical use. After clinical use, discard the instrument. Do not clean, disinfect, sterilize, re-sterilize or reuse the file after clinical use.

  • For professional dental use only. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and rubber dam isolation.
  • Use only with a compatible torque-controlled endodontic motor in continuous rotary motion.
  • Use 500 rpm for gutta-percha or carrier-based obturators and 250–300 rpm for soluble zinc oxide–eugenol paste.
  • Use D1 and D2 at 2.0 N·cm and D3 at 1.5 N·cm.
  • Do not use D1 around a canal curvature.
  • Do not use engine-driven retreatment files in abrupt apical curvature when safe passive progression cannot be achieved; use appropriate pre-curved hand files.
  • Always use minimal apical pressure. Never force a retreatment file down the canal.
  • Withdraw frequently, clean the flutes and inspect the instrument for distortion, unwinding, wear, corrosion or damaged cutting edges.
  • Irrigate abundantly and frequently throughout retreatment and after each instrument.
  • If a file does not progress easily, withdraw it, clean and inspect the flutes, irrigate, recapitulate with a manual file and reassess before continuing.
  • Continue rotary filling-material removal only while the instrument advances without force and obturation material is being removed.
  • Follow the current NIC® product label and IFU for reuse, reprocessing, storage and disposal requirements.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Quick answers about product selection, configuration and clinical use.

Can D1 be used around a canal curvature?

No. D1 should not be used around a canal curvature. For abrupt apical curvature or anatomy that does not permit safe passive rotary progression, use appropriate pre-curved hand files.

What should I do if the NIC® O Retreatment File stops progressing?

Withdraw the instrument, clean and inspect the flutes, irrigate the canal, recapitulate with a manual file and reassess before continuing. Do not increase apical pressure to force progression.

What happens after the old filling material is removed by NIC® O Retreatment Files?

Renegotiate the canal with small hand files, re-establish patency and working length, create a reproducible glide path, then shape and finish the canal using the selected shaping system according to its IFU.

What speed should I use for gutta-percha?

Use 500 rpm for removing gutta-percha and carrier-based obturators. Use D1 and D2 at 2.0 N·cm and D3 at 1.5 N·cm.

What speed should I use for soluble zinc oxide–eugenol paste?

Use 250–300 rpm for soluble zinc oxide–eugenol paste. Use D1 and D2 at 2.0 N·cm and D3 at 1.5 N·cm.

Are NIC® O Retreatment Files supplied sterile?

No. NIC® O Retreatment Files are supplied non-sterile and must be sterilized before first clinical use. Steam sterilize at 134°C for 18 minutes using a validated process and allow the instruments to dry completely. Follow the current NIC® product label and IFU.

What is NIC® O Retreatment designed as an alternative to?

NIC® O Retreatment is positioned as a direct alternative to Dentsply ProTaper® Universal Retreatment, using the familiar D1, D2 and D3 sequence with corresponding nominal sizes, tapers and operating settings.

Which retreatment file is used in each canal third?

Use D1 30/.09 for coronal filling-material removal, D2 25/.08 for the middle third and D3 20/.07 for deeper or apical filling-material removal when canal anatomy permits.

Which obturation materials can NIC® O Retreatment Files remove?

The system is designed for the mechanical removal of gutta-percha, carrier-based obturators and soluble paste materials during nonsurgical root canal retreatment. Select the documented operating speed according to the material being removed.

Where is NIC® O Retreatment Files manufactured?

NIC® O Retreatment Files are manufactured in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.
